One of Dublin City Council’s many local community 1916 Commemorative projects is a five panel ‘1916 in the Liberties’ mural to be created by five primary schools in the area of Ceannt’s South Dublin Union, Colbert’s Marrowbone Lane Distillery and Heuston’s Mendicity Institution garrisons.
Most of those who fought in these almost totally lost, destroyed and forgotten heritage buildings came from The Liberties of Dublin, yet their descendants are to be found today in every classroom of St. Enda’s, Whitefriars; St Brigid’s, The Coombe; St Audoen’s, Cook St; Scoil Treas Naofa, Petrie Rd; and Francis St CBS.
Each school is working on a 1916 panel of their own choosing, led by artist Kathryn Maguire, and co-ordinated by the local LINK team of Home School Liaison Officers. The Mendicity Garrison Relatives have been assisting various of these schools with historical information, illustrated talks and heritage walks. Aisling Dreaming Again has also contributed to the artist’s costs.
The accompanying pictures were taken on a heritage walk with St. Audoen’s PS, the school closest to the Mendicity, standing today where one of our combatants, William O’Dea, lived in 1916. Click on St Audoen’s album for more photos.
